Qashqai — Tribal Weaving of the Zagros Mountains
The Qashqai are one of the great tribal confederations of southwestern Iran, traditionally semi-nomadic in the Zagros mountains. Their flatweaves are hand-woven from hand-spun highland wool with natural dyes, in the geometric vocabulary that has been carried for generations. This piece is a small flatweave mat in the traditional tribal idiom.
Presence in the Room
At 70 × 140 cm (1.0 m²) this is a focused accent format. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Entryway: Beside the door, a small flatweave gives an entrance the kind of textile welcome that a doormat cannot.
- Kitchen accent: In front of the sink or under a kitchen island stool, the wool flatweave adds tactile warmth.
- Children’s room or playroom: A robust, washable, naturally-dyed flatweave that belongs in a room used every day.
