Almost every rug in this collection is hand-knotted wool, and for good reason: wool is resilient, recovers from furniture dents and holds its natural lanolin, so dirt tends to sit on the fibre rather than working straight in. That makes it the right choice for living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, the rooms where a rug is actually used.

The character of the wool varies with its origin. Tibetan highland wool is long-stapled and soft, with a natural lustre. Persian kork wool, taken from the neck and shoulders, is finer and takes dye particularly well. Tribal rugs are often knotted from coarser, hard-wearing village wool. The product description names the wool where we know it.
