A Classic Medallion in Pure Silk

Qum (also Qom, Ghom) is the modern centre of Persian silk weaving — its ateliers emerged in the 20th century and quickly became the international benchmark for fine silk knotting. This small-format piece is hand-knotted entirely in mulberry silk, both pile and foundation. At roughly 800,000 knots per m², the density lets the curved lines of the central medallion and the small floral fills read sharply at close distance — detail no coarser construction can render. The pile is approximately 5 mm, low and tightly clipped in the Qum manner.

Colour and Composition

The composition is the classical Qum: a central ivory floral medallion with red and green rosettes at its heart, set on a deep indigo-blue field. Around it, floral sprays and corner motifs — roses, buds and leafy stems — are scattered across the blue ground. A multi-band border frames the field: a coral-red outer edge, an ivory main border worked with flowers and rosettes, and fine turquoise-green guard stripes. The palette is warm and characterful: indigo blue, ivory, coral-red, green, salmon-apricot and gold-brown, with turquoise accents. As with all pure silk, the surface shifts with the light — the same piece reads differently morning and evening.

Placement and Display

At 79 × 56 cm (0.4 m²) the format invites display rather than floor traffic. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:

• Wall hanging: Behind a console or in a reading corner, where the silk catches changing light — the use small Qum silks are most often put to.
• Centred on a low table: A jewel-like accent that rewards close looking.
• Entryway: A first impression of fine workmanship in a small footprint.
