Mystique Designer Rug
245 × 305 cm · Ivory Damask on Heathered Grey · Room Size
A classical damask lattice dissolved into something closer to weathered fresco — hand-knotted in India in wool with viscose, in a room-size 245 × 305 cm format.
The Mystique Collection
The Mystique Collection takes the ornamental vocabulary of the classical carpet — palmettes, scrolling vine, symmetrical bouquets — and reads it through a contemporary filter. The drawing is complete and correct, but the edges are deliberately softened, as if the pattern had faded into the ground over decades. The result sits comfortably in European, Mediterranean, vintage and midcentury interiors, where a fully articulated classical carpet would assert itself too strongly.
This piece is hand-knotted in India at approximately 100 knots per square inch — roughly 155,000 knots per square metre — a density that holds the fine scrollwork of the damask without hardening its outlines.
Colour and Composition
The field carries a repeating damask lattice of crowned palmettes and heart-shaped scroll cartouches, arranged in staggered rows across the full surface. There is no border — the pattern runs to all four edges, which is what gives the rug its textile rather than framed-carpet character.
The ground is a heathered grey, spun from several tones so that it reads as a living surface rather than a flat colour, with darker charcoal flecks scattered through it. Against this the motifs stand in ivory — depending on the light they can appear almost white or settle back into a warmer cream. The contrast is quiet: from standing height the pattern registers as texture, and only resolves into distinct ornament as you come closer.
Material and Construction
The pile is 85 % wool and 15 % viscose on a cotton foundation. The two fibres are not blended but assigned: the grey ground is knotted in fine wool, the ivory motifs in viscose. Because viscose takes light differently from wool, the ornament lifts out of the ground optically rather than through colour contrast alone — which is why the pattern shifts as you move around the room or as the daylight changes.
Pile height is approximately 12 mm in a dense construction. The rug is finished without fringes, closing flush on all four sides. An anti-slip underlay is recommended on smooth floors.
Presence in the Room
At 245 × 305 cm (7.5 m²) this is a full room-size rug that defines a whole furniture group:
- Living room: Sofa, armchairs and table stand entirely on the rug. The restrained palette lets it work as a ground rather than a focal point, which suits rooms where the furniture or the art should lead.
- Dining room: Room for a table seating six to eight with chairs remaining on the pile when pushed back. The dense, fringe-free construction is practical here — nothing for chair legs to catch.
- Bedroom or study: Under a king bed with the lower two-thirds exposed, or beneath a desk and shelving, where the near-neutral grey holds a room together without competing with it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is viscose used for the motifs?
Viscose is a regenerated cellulose fibre with a pronounced sheen. Knotted alongside matte wool it creates a difference in light reflection rather than in colour, so the ornament appears to float slightly above the ground and changes character with the angle of view. Here it is confined to the ivory drawing; the entire grey field is wool.
What does a rug without fringes mean in practice?
The warp ends are turned and secured rather than left loose, so the rug closes flush on all four sides. It sits flatter against the floor, is easier to place under doors and furniture, and removes the part of a rug most prone to wear and to catching on chair legs and vacuum heads.
How should this rug be cleaned?
Vacuum regularly at reduced power, without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Viscose is sensitive to moisture, so blot spills immediately with a dry cloth and never rub or soak. For thorough cleaning, professional rug washing only — no dry cleaning and no domestic wet extraction.
