An antique Kashan from central Iran, circa 1920 — a classical floral medallion on a deep red field, in large format.
Origin and Weaving Tradition
Kashan, in central Iran, has been a centre of carpet weaving since the Safavid era and is known for its classical floral medallion carpets. This piece stands in that tradition: a generously scaled medallion carpet, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation.
This is an antique piece, hand-knotted around 1920 in the asymmetrical Persian knot, more than 100 years old. After more than a century it shows a soft, harmonised palette and a quiet patina.
Colour and Composition
The composition is the classical Kashan floral medallion. A deep red field, densely worked with curling floral vines, palmettes and small rosettes, carries a substantial central pointed medallion with an ivory-cream inner field filled with blossoms, closed top and bottom by indigo pendants. Four navy-blue corner spandrels with floral drawing frame the medallion. A broad navy main border of large palmettes and connecting vines is flanked by lighter sky-blue guard borders with running floral repeats. Beyond the red ground and navy, the palette carries ivory, sky blue, salmon-rose, muted green and honey-brown accents.
Condition
Good condition for its age. The pile is slightly lower in places and even across most of the field; the selvedges and sides have been professionally secured; there are no holes and no open seams.
Presence in the Room
At 330 × 550 cm (18.15 m²) this is a very large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Formal dining room: under a long dining table, the red ground and floral medallion give the room warmth.
- Grand salon or large living room: with antique furniture, panelling and brass, a classical medallion carpet in a traditional interior.
- Reception hall or hotel lobby: in a generously proportioned entrance or lobby, a carpet that can be looked at closely.
