Antique Mohajeran Sarouk Rug
12 × 17 ft · 365 × 510 cm · Indigo, Rose & Ivory
An antique Mohajeran Sarouk from the Arak region, circa 1920 — an all-over floral field on deep indigo, framed by a salmon-rose blossom border.
Origin and Weaving Tradition
The Mohajeran Sarouk belongs to the Sarouk tradition of the region near Arak in central Iran. This piece was hand-knotted around 1920 in wool on a cotton foundation, using the Persian knot.
This is an antique piece, woven circa 1920, more than 100 years old. It has a full, even pile throughout, with no thin areas or wear.
Colour and Composition
The composition is an all-over floral field on a deep indigo-blue ground, organised around a central rosette medallion among large symmetrical flower bouquets, palmettes and curling boteh (paisley) forms. A broad multi-band blossom border on a soft salmon-rose ground frames the field. Indigo and salmon-rose are joined by red, sky-blue and turquoise, ivory, gold and muted green.
Condition
Full, even pile throughout, supple, with no thin areas or wear.
Presence in the Room
At 365 × 510 cm (18.6 m²) this is a very large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Grand salon or large living room: in a high-ceilinged room with antique furniture, a floral field that can be read from across the room.
- Dining room: under a long table with space around it, the all-over design stays in view.
- Hotel or embassy: a large-format piece for lobbies, reception halls and other representative spaces.
