Provenance: The Garrus Region

Bidjar (also Bijar), in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, lies at the heart of the historic Garrus district. The town gave its name to the densest rugs in the Persian canon: the wefts are beaten down so firmly that they have long been called the “iron rugs of Persia.” Alongside the formal town production, the Kurdish villages of the region wove freer, more pictorial pieces, drawn from memory rather than from a cartoon. This rug belongs to that village tradition.

Design: A Field Full of Life

At the centre lies a stepped brick-red field, its upper and lower edges cut like a gabled roof. In it stand two pairs of stags with chequered bodies and branching antlers, surrounded by small birds, rosettes and hooked motifs. Two slate-blue panels with chains of diamonds run along the central axis, crossed by a horizontal band of blossoms in cornflower blue, ivory and peach.

Above and below, the field opens onto a jet-black ground: hexagonal panels with stylised trees of life, gabled forms like little houses, birds and star rosettes. A fine golden meander encloses the field, and the broad rust-red main border carries large stylised motifs in deep teal and ivory, with latch hooks and zigzag edges. Ivory cotton fringes finish both ends.

Quality

Knotted at approximately 160,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 103 kpsi, in 100% wool on a cotton warp, with a 12 mm pile. The rug weighs around 30 kg, a weight that speaks of its dense, firmly beaten Bidjar construction and lets it lie flat on the floor.
