Vintage Hereke Palatial
330 × 500 cm · Ivory & Salmon Medallion
A large Hereke from Turkey, hand-knotted c. 1990–2000 in the tradition of the Ottoman court manufactory founded in 1843.
Provenance and Heritage
Hereke, on the eastern shore of the Sea of Marmara, is known for the Imperial Ottoman manufactory founded there in 1843 under Sultan Abdülmecid I. Originally established to supply the Ottoman court, the Hereke workshops developed a reputation for fine knotting that continued under Republican patronage after 1923, and the name remains associated with high-density Turkish rugs.
This large piece was hand-knotted in Hereke, Turkey, between approximately 1990 and 2000, from fine wool with a silky sheen on a cotton foundation, at approximately 360,000 knots per m² (approx. 232 knots per inch²). The composition follows the classical Hereke vocabulary: a central medallion anchors the field, framed by floral filigree in the Ottoman court tradition.
Colour and Composition
The rug is built on a luminous ivory field filled with dense floral filigree, anchored by a salmon-and-coral sun medallion with a deep navy star at its core. A camel-gold main border with palmettes frames the composition, set off by turquoise guard stripes that run through the field and inner borders. The full palette pairs ivory, salmon and camel-gold with turquoise, navy, soft green and warm brown. The warm, light register suits stately interiors, generous living rooms, dining halls and boardrooms.
Presence in the Room
At 330 × 500 cm (approx. 11 × 16 ft), 16.5 m² this is a palatial-format piece. Three contexts in which the Hereke comes into its own:
- Large living room: anchoring a full sofa group with armchairs and side tables, the central medallion provides a clear focus while the ivory ground keeps a generously scaled room light and open.
- Formal dining room: under a long table for eight to twelve, the floral filigree reads as a measured architectural pattern from above.
- Boardroom or executive office: the classical medallion and warm, light palette suit a representative space.
