Provenance and Manufactory Heritage

Hand-knotted in the celebrated weaving city of Kashan in central Iran around 1950, this is a pure-silk carpet in the classical Kashan tradition. Kashan lies on an ancient Silk Road route running from Anatolia through Tehran toward Yazd and on to India, and has been renowned for its weaving since the fifteenth century, when European kings and nobility commissioned carpets from its looms for their courts.

From around 1870 Kashan entered an era of exquisite manufactories — names such as Dabir and Mohtasham among other outstanding workshops — and the city's reputation was built on the finest imported English Manchester wool and, for its most precious pieces, on silk. This carpet belongs to that silk tradition: knotted in fine, lustrous silk throughout, with the precise, drawing-led articulation for which the best Kashans are prized.

Colour and Composition

The carpet glows on a luminous red ground — the silk catching the light and shifting in tone as you move around it. At the centre sits a small, finely drawn ivory diamond medallion on a dark cartouche, with matching pendants above and below; around it spreads a densely worked floral field of roses, blossom sprays, palmettes and curling leaves.

A deep navy-black main border of scrolling flowers frames the field, set off by ivory and salmon guard borders. The palette combines red, navy and black with brass-gold, ivory and salmon and small accents of green and blue — the classic, warm Kashan harmony.

Presence in the Room

At 210 × 138 cm (2.9 m²) this is a versatile small-to-medium format. Three settings in which a silk Kashan of this size shows at its best:

• Living room: in front of a sofa or between seating, where the silk pile shifts in the light through the day.
• Dining room: under a smaller round or square table, framing the setting with its dense floral field.
• Large bedroom or study: beside the bed or in a reading corner, a glowing accent that rewards a closer look.
