Palatial Vintage Ziegler Mahal
13 × 18 ft · 396 × 545 cm · Sand Beige & Garnet Red
Large-scale floral palmettes in sand beige, muted rose and garnet red — a palatial format in hand-spun wool.
Design Heritage and Knotting Tradition
The Ziegler Mahal design goes back to the late 19th century, when Ziegler & Co. had rugs produced in the Mahal/Sultanabad region of central Iran — large-scale floral palmettes in a symmetrical all-over layout, scaled and recoloured for Western tastes.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan between 1990 and 2000, this palatial piece carries the design forward in 100 % hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, coloured with natural dyes. The muted palette — sand beige, muted rose, garnet red — gives the large surface a calm, even appearance.
Presence in the Room
At 396 × 545 cm (21.6 m², approx. 13 × 18 ft) this is a true palatial format. Three contexts in which the piece works well:
- Grand salon and stately interiors: beneath a generous sofa group with classical or eclectic furniture.
- Formal dining hall: under a long table for ten to fourteen, the all-over floral palmettes read as a horizontal pattern from above.
- Hospitality and reception rooms: in hotel lobbies, club libraries or reception rooms, the muted palette sits quietly beside the architecture.
