Provenance and Sabah Collection
The Sabah collection is a Djoharian Design creation, hand-knotted by experienced women weavers in the region of Khenifra in Morocco. Because the looms are typically set up inside the weavers' own homes, most Sabah pieces come in small to medium formats. Large-format Sabah rugs are the exception — they require extended looms and many additional months of work. This 305 x 427 cm large format is one of the largest pieces we currently offer in the line.
The piece was hand-knotted in the Khenifra region of Morocco from 100% imported merino wool on a wool foundation, with a deep pile of 18 to 22 mm. The merino construction gives a softer haptic underfoot than the traditional hand-spun Berber wool.
Colour and Composition
The composition stays in the Sabah signature: a luminous ivory-cream ground scattered with a regular all-over grid of small saffron-gold cross motifs — understated, contemporary, ready to anchor a large room without competing with it. The piece is finished with a saffron-and-ivory striped kilim end-band and natural wool fringes. At 13 m² this is a piece for generous living rooms, open-plan dining areas, or stately interiors where a smaller rug would feel lost.
Presence in the Room
At 305 x 427 cm (10.0 x 14.0 ft), 13.0 m² this is an oversize piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Open-plan living room: the textbook palette for a full sofa group with armchairs and side tables, deep pile pleasant underfoot.
- Generous dining room: under a long table for eight to ten, the soft ivory reads as quiet architectural anchor from above.
- Grand bedroom or principal suite: tactile foundation for a complete bedroom composition.

What makes a large-format Sabah special?
With Sabah, the looms are traditionally set up inside the weavers' own homes in the Khenifra region — which automatically limits the maximum size to what fits in a living space. For large formats, extended looms are used, and the knotting time grows accordingly by many additional months. Large-format Sabah pieces are therefore the exception in our stock.
How does the large format differ from the smaller Sabah pieces?
The difference lies in the tooling — extended looms and more material and time per piece. The design vocabulary remains the same Sabah signature: a calm ivory-cream ground with understated accents, here saffron-gold crosses.
Delivery and care for a large-format, high-pile rug?
Delivery is by specialist freight carrier; at 37 kg the rug cannot be handled as an ordinary parcel, and it is shipped rolled and wrapped. Two people should be available to receive it. Care: vacuum regularly without a beater bar in the direction of the pile, blot stains immediately with cold water, professional hand wash every 5 to 7 years or as needed.
