The Arijana Tribal Line

Arijana kilims are hand-woven in workshops of southern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border — a region with a long tradition of tribal flatweave. The Arijana idiom reinterprets the historic tribal designs of the area in highland wool, with colour drawn from natural plant dyes. The wool is hand-spun, the structure is a pure flatweave with fringes on both ends, and every piece carries the slight irregularities that mark genuine hand-woven work.

Colour and Design

This piece is composed of horizontal tribal bands, each filled with a row of stepped diamonds, small cross-and-plus motifs and serrated hooks — the classic nomadic vocabulary of the region. The bands are framed on both long sides by a serrated arrow border. The palette is exceptionally rich: olive and emerald green, rose and old-pink, ochre and mustard, orange-rust, light blue and cornflower, with cream and black-brown accents. The natural plant dyes give the colours a quiet, lived-in register, and the fine striation within each band is the signature of hand-spun wool. Every diamond is drawn freehand, so the rhythm of the rows is the weaver's own.

Presence in the Room

At 200 × 150 cm (3.0 m², approx. 5 × 6.6 ft) this is a medium-format piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:

• In front of a sofa: A textile anchor under a coffee table for a two- to three-seat sofa group — the banded diamonds bring character and colour without overpowering the room.
• Bedroom anchor: Beside a bed as a soft, colourful step in the morning, or at the foot end as a tribal accent.
• Dining for four: Under a small round or square table; the flatweave construction makes chair movement easy.
