Hereke Silk Rug — Golden Field with a Floral Medallion 4 × 6 ft
A finely hand-knotted silk-on-silk Hereke from around 1940/50, its softly patinated golden field drawn with blossoms and palmettes around a central floral medallion.
Provenance and Manufactory Heritage
Hand-knotted in Hereke, north-western Turkey around 1940/50, this is a silk-on-silk carpet in the classical Hereke tradition. Hereke is a town on the Gulf of İzmit, a short distance east of Istanbul, whose name has been synonymous with the finest court weaving since the Imperial Manufactory was founded there in 1843 under Sultan Abdülmecid to supply the Ottoman palaces.
From that imperial workshop the Hereke name passed to the town's master weavers, who carried its silk tradition through the twentieth century. Knotted in lustrous silk on a silk foundation, with the precise, drawing-led articulation for which Hereke is prized, this carpet belongs squarely to that lineage — fine, light-catching and quietly luxurious.
Colour and Composition
The carpet rests on a soft golden field — the silk catching the light and shifting in tone as you move around it. At the centre sits a rounded floral medallion in terracotta and copper, with sage-green and soft-blue florets around an ivory heart and slender pendants above and below; terracotta corner spandrels answer it in the four corners.
Between them spreads a densely worked field of blossoms, palmettes and curling vines, framed by an ivory main border of scrolling flowers and salmon guard stripes. The palette combines gold, ivory and cream with terracotta-copper, sage green and soft blue and salmon accents — a soft, warm harmony deepened by a gentle patina and a natural abrash across the field.
Presence in the Room
At 170 × 122 cm (2.07 m²) this is a small, versatile silk format. Three settings in which a silk Hereke of this size shows at its best:
- Living room: as an accent in front of a sofa or armchair, where the silk pile shifts in the light through the day.
- Bedroom: beside the bed or at its foot, a soft, glowing note underfoot.
- Study or hallway: a refined small piece for a desk corner or entrance that rewards a closer look.
A silk-on-silk Hereke of this fineness is both a furnishing and a collector's piece, supplied with a certificate of authenticity and full provenance documentation.
