PETAG-Style Rug
4 × 6 ft · 183 × 122 cm · Blue, Pink & Gold
A PETAG-style revival of a 16th-century Persian court design — royal blue, old rose and gold, hand-knotted in India.
A PETAG-Style Revival, Hand-Knotted in India
This rug is woven in the design tradition of the PETAG (Persische Teppich AG) — a German-led company founded in Berlin in 1911, whose programme was to revive the great Persian court compositions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. PETAG's original production took place in Tabriz and other workshops between roughly 1911 and the 1930s; the company's design language has since become a recognised genre in the trade.
This piece is a contemporary hand-knotted rug in the PETAG manner, produced in India. The design vocabulary is faithful to the PETAG repertoire — a finely drawn medallion-and-corner composition on a tightly worked field — while the construction is current Indian workshop quality at approximately 100 knots per square inch.
The Design — Safavid Revival
The composition follows the PETAG playbook: a central medallion with floral pendants, corner figures balancing the medallion, and a multi-band border carrying connecting palmettes. The drawing is denser and more disciplined than a typical workshop Tabriz — PETAG-style pieces sit closer to the museum models they were drawn from than to the everyday market output of any single weaving city.
Colour and Composition
The palette is rich and unusually colourful for the genre. A deep royal blue field is set against broad passages of old rose pink and gold-saffron, with the dark central medallion framed in gold. The drawing is carried through in light blue, ivory and coral, and the border runs a light-blue ground with a gold inner guard. The result is a vivid blue-pink-gold register — a PETAG composition in a brighter, more decorative key than the sombre court originals.
Placement
At 183 × 122 cm the piece sits well in a study, beside a bed, or in a generous entryway. The disciplined composition makes it a piece that reads from close range — ideal for rooms where the rug is seen at conversational distance rather than from across a large hall. Wool-and-silk pile is durable for everyday use, the silk adding a subtle sheen to the floral drawing. Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring; suitable above underfloor heating.
