Karakul is a small, closely chosen collection of new hand-knotted rugs from Afghanistan. Every piece is selected individually by our family — in the rug trade since 1967, with roots in the Grand Carpet Bazaar of Tehran — for its drawing, its colour and the evenness of its knotting. There are no repeats and nothing to reorder from a catalogue: each Karakul rug is one of a kind, and the rug you see is the rug you receive.

The designs draw on the village and workshop traditions of the region — tribal medallions, bold Caucasian-style geometry, open floral fields — in warm, softened palettes of rosewood, apricot, saffron, teal and indigo.

Karakul rugs for London and the English country house

The Karakul collection is chosen with British homes in mind. In London, that means the tall sitting rooms of Georgian and Victorian terraces, mansion flats in Kensington, Chelsea and Marylebone, and converted warehouse lofts in Clerkenwell and Shoreditch. Outside town, it means the country house: a honey-stone manor in the Cotswolds, a rectory in Oxfordshire, a family house in the Surrey Hills. And it means the great Georgian streets beyond London: a townhouse in Bath, a New Town flat in Edinburgh. These are rooms with wide oak boards, deep window seats and fires lit in the evening.

Most pieces are around 9 x 12 ft (270 x 365 cm), the size that suits both. It holds a full seating group with every front leg on the rug and still leaves the floorboards showing at the edges. Hand-knotted wool also copes with country life: boots, dogs and the occasional spill from a glass of wine.

Before you decide, we are glad to send additional daylight photographs or show you the rug on a video call. The same rugs sit just as well in a Brooklyn brownstone, a Manhattan loft or a house in the Hamptons, and we deliver to the United States as well as to London and the Cotswolds, where your rug arrives within 2–7 working days. → Rugs for New York homes
