Rugs by size
Size is the decision people get wrong most often, and the one that is hardest to correct afterwards. Everything else — origin, colour, pattern — is a matter of taste. Size is a matter of measurement.
The categories below are by area rather than by format name, because a rug that works in one room may be quite wrong in another of the same size. If you are unsure, mark the dimensions on your floor with masking tape and live with it for a day before ordering.
The size categories
- Small — under 3 m² — bedside rugs, entrance pieces, fine silk small formats and rugs intended for the wall rather than the floor.
- Medium — 3 to 6 m² — up to about 200 × 300 cm. Bedrooms, studies, compact living rooms. The most-bought range in Europe.
- 6 × 9 and 7 × 10 ft — roughly 5 to 6.5 m², the step between medium and large.
- Large — 6 to 9 m² — 8 × 10 ft and similar. A full living room group, or a dining table seating six.
- Extra large and oversize — 9 to 15 m² — 9 × 12 ft upwards. Reception rooms, large dining rooms, open-plan spaces.
- Palatial — above 15 m² — in stock to about 50 m², woven to order to approximately 200 m².
- Runners — long and narrow, roughly 60 to 120 cm wide and 180 to 600 cm long, for corridors, kitchens and stairs.
Two rules worth knowing
Dining rooms: the rug must extend 60 to 70 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs stay on the carpet when pulled back. This is the reason most dining rugs are too small — a table for six needs 250 × 300 cm as a minimum, not 200 × 300 cm.
Living rooms: at the very least, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should stand on the rug. A carpet narrower than the sofa in front of it will always look like an afterthought.
If the size does not exist
Rooms are rarely standard, and antique rugs come in the dimensions they were woven in, not the ones you need. Where nothing in stock fits, we weave to measure in any format up to approximately 200 m², in classical, transitional or contemporary designs, with a typical lead time of three to six months. One point on measurements throughout the shop: hand-knotted rugs are measured, not manufactured. A piece listed at 250 × 300 cm may vary by a centimetre or two from one end to the other. Where a rug has to fit exactly, tell us and we will measure that specific piece at several points.
