6 × 9 and 7 × 10 ft — roughly 180 × 275 to 215 × 305 cm

This is the size most people are actually looking for. It is big enough to hold a seating group together and small enough for a normal apartment living room, a bedroom or a study. In a European room of about 18 to 25 m² it usually fits without measuring twice.

Where it works, and where it does not

• Living room — yes. The standard arrangement is the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on the rug, back legs on the floor. That ties the furniture together without needing a carpet that runs to the walls. Leave roughly 20 to 30 cm of floor visible between the rug and the skirting.
• Bedroom — yes. Laid under the lower two thirds of a double bed, or sideways across the foot. You get a warm surface where you step out, and the rug is not hidden under the headboard.
• Study, home office, entrance — yes. Large enough to sit under a desk and chair with room for the castors to move.
• Dining room — usually not. A dining rug has to extend about 60 to 75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so that chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled back. At 180 cm wide, a table 90 cm deep leaves only 45 cm on each side, and the back chair legs drop off the edge every time someone sits down. An honest note on choosing size

Most people buy too small. A rug looks considerably bigger rolled out in a showroom than it does under furniture, and the commonest regret we hear is that the piece should have been one size up. Before ordering, mark the dimensions on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day — it takes five minutes and it settles the question better than any diagram.

Care

Vacuum in the direction of the pile and keep the rotating brush bar off the fringes. Turn the rug end for end once a year so that footfall and daylight fall evenly — in a living room the area in front of the sofa takes almost all the traffic. Blot spills rather than rubbing. A hand wash every few years keeps the wool supple.
