In a study, a library or a home office, a rug mainly does two things: it takes the echo out of a room full of hard surfaces, and it gives the room a calmer, more finished look. Medium formats, a low pile and a quiet palette suit most of these rooms.
If a desk chair on castors will run over the rug, put a clear chair mat under the chair area. Castors abrade the pile over time and open the slits in a flatweave.
