Tibetan Dragon Pillar Rug
9 × 3 ft · 285 × 100 cm
A column-format rug woven for the carved pillars of Chinese temples — a hand-knotted dragon coiling across a sage-green ground.
Pillar Rugs — A Forgotten Tradition
The pillar rug (or column carpet) is one of the more specialised forms in the East Asian textile tradition. These long, narrow rugs were not woven for floors but to be wrapped around the carved wooden columns of Chinese Buddhist and Taoist temples, where their dragon imagery appeared to coil around the pillar when the rug was hung in place. The design must therefore read as a continuous composition from any angle — the dragon's body forms a spiralling motion across the length of the rug rather than a flat repeated pattern. Few of these survive today as a living craft tradition; this contemporary interpretation continues the form for the collector and connoisseur of Chinese textile heritage.
Design
A single five-clawed imperial dragon rises diagonally across the field, jaws open toward the flaming pearl of wisdom, its scaled body drawn in gold and camel against a soft sage-green ground. Around it float ruyi cloud-bands, fire emblems and the Buddhist endless knot, while the lower end resolves into the classical mountain-and-wave base (lishui) of diagonal water-stripes — the full vocabulary of the Chinese dragon carpet. The palette is quiet and tonal: sage green, gold, camel and ivory, with black outlines and accents.
Presence in the Room
At 285 × 100 cm (2.85 m², approx. 9 × 3 ft) the proportions follow the pillar tradition. Three contexts in which the piece reaches its full effect:
- Wall hanging: Mounted vertically as the form intends, the dragon composition reads as a textile artwork in its own right — the design opens fully only when read from top to bottom.
- Hallway or staircase runner: The elongated proportions serve as a hand-knotted runner with significant visual presence, the green and gold palette warming a transitional space.
- Beside an architectural feature: Adjacent to a column, fireplace surround or cabinetry where the vertical composition can be appreciated end-to-end.
