Beni Ourain Mrirt Berber Rug — Hand-Knotted Cream and Beige Wool in a Fan-Wave Pattern
Hand-knotted by women of the Beni Ourain Mrirt tribe in the Moroccan Middle Atlas Mountains, in plush highland wool with a tonal cream-and-beige fan-wave design.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
Beni Ourain rugs are hand-knotted by women of the Beni Ourain tribe in the villages of the Moroccan Middle Atlas. The Mrirt variant is the finest expression of this tradition — woven in glossy, premium highland wool. This piece moves away from the classic graphic palette into a quiet, tonal composition: a fan-like wave of fine diagonal lines radiating across the field in cream, beige and warm camel-gold, reading almost like wind-drawn dunes or natural grain.
Each piece is unique. The drawing is not taken from a fixed pattern; it is worked freely by the weaver, so the rhythm of the lines is hers alone.
Presence in the Room
At 300 × 200 cm (6.0 m², approx. 7 × 10 ft) this is a generous large-format piece. Three contexts in which the Mrirt reaches its full effect:
- Modern living room: Beneath a sofa group of three to four pieces — the tonal cream-and-beige wave brings warmth and movement without competing with the furniture.
- Dining room for six to eight: Under a generous rectangular table, where the radiating line-work reads as a calm, organic pattern from above.
- Bedroom anchor: Beneath a king-size bed with generous overhang; the plush pile invites bare feet at the start and end of the day.
