Ersari — One of the Great Turkoman Tribes

The Ersari are one of the ten legendary Turkmen tribes, whose ancestral lands span the steppes between Merv and Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. Their carpets are renowned for robust construction and the iconic octagonal Gül motif — a tribal emblem rendered with the discipline of urban workshops. In the late 19th century, Ersari rugs became known in Britain as “Gentlemen's Carpets,” preferred for mahogany libraries and smoking rooms. This vintage piece carries that lineage — hand-knotted wool with the muted tribal Gül drawing and warm earth-tone palette that defines the type.

Colour and Composition

Three columns of large octagonal Güls are set in rows across a warm camel ground, each Gül worked in dark indigo-blue and black with rust, brick-brown and ivory detail, and small cruciform plant motifs scattered between them. The field is framed by multiple minor borders carrying zigzag, diamond and star motifs. The palette has the quiet, settled warmth of a genuine vintage Turkoman — earth tones softened by decades of use rather than the harder contrast of new production.

Presence in the Room

At 300 × 224 cm (6.7 m²) this is a generous large room-size rug. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:

• Library or study: Beneath leather chairs and dark wood, the Ersari Gül is in its native habitat — grounding, masculine, scholarly.
• Living room anchor: Under a sofa configuration, the muted earth palette establishes a quiet, dignified foundation.
