Semi-Antique Heriz Rug
8 × 12 ft · 251 × 365 cm · Brick-Red, Indigo & Ivory
A semi-antique Heriz from north-west Persia, circa 1940s — hand-knotted in wool, with an angular medallion on a brick-red field.
Origin and Weaving Tradition
The town of Heriz lies in north-west Persia, between Tabriz and Ardabil. Heriz rugs are defined by a large, angular medallion, generous corner spandrels and a geometric vocabulary of stylised vinework and palmettes — a graphic strength shared with the weaving traditions of the nearby Caucasus.
This is a semi-antique piece, circa 1940s, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation. The wool has aged to a deep patina. The rug is in excellent condition: freshly washed, with edges and fringes intact and original.
Design and Colour
A large stepped, angular medallion with pendants sits at the centre of a deep brick-red field, framed by navy-indigo corner spandrels and a broad indigo main border of large palmettes. The drawing is the classic Heriz repertoire — bold, geometric and architectural. The palette is brick-red and indigo, carrying ivory, rose and old-pink, soft green, gold and pale blue, in natural dyes.
Presence in the Room
At 251 × 365 cm (9.2 m²) this is a large room-size rug. Three settings in which it works well:
- Living room: anchoring a full seating group, the brick-red field and angular medallion give the room warmth and structure.
- Dining room: large enough for a big table with the chairs pulled back.
- Study or traditional interior: the geometric Heriz drawing suits traditional furniture as well as modern, architectural rooms.
The bold Heriz drawing and brick-red field are made for a Cotswold farmhouse or a manor in the Surrey Hills — flagstones, a long oak table, a fire in the grate — and the rug reaches the Cotswolds or London within 2–7 working days.
