A rare Nain in red: a midnight-blue medallion on a warm rust-red cartouche field, framed by an ivory floral border, knotted at around one million knots per square metre with silk outlines.
Provenance: Nain and the 6la Quality
Nain, a small town on the edge of the desert in central Iran, is known for some of the finest rugs in Persia. Its grades are given in “la”, the number of strands twisted into the warp yarn: the fewer strands, the finer the warp and the denser the knotting. The common grades are 4la, 6la and 9la. This 6la is knotted at around 1,000,000 knots per square metre, roughly 645 kpsi. The pile is kork wool, the soft, lustrous wool from the neck and shoulders of the sheep, with the outlines of blossoms and tendrils worked in silk.
Design: Medallion on Rust Red
Most Nain rugs come in ivory and blue; this one sets its pattern on a warm rust-red field, shaped like a large cartouche with curving ivory spandrels. At its centre sits a midnight-blue medallion with a light, four-petalled core and two pendants above and below. Fine floral sprays in light blue, ivory and midnight blue surround it. The broad ivory main border carries blue palmettes and tendrils, framed by narrow guard stripes in brown and beige.
