A new hand-knotted Farahan-style rug — an all-over palmette field on a soft blue-grey ground, framed by an ivory palmette border, made to order by Djoharian Design.
The Farahan Tradition
The Farahan tradition of west-central Iran is characterised by stylised palmettes and botanical arabesques arranged in a calm, regular rhythm rather than dense ornament.
This is a new piece, hand-knotted to order by Djoharian Design in Afghanistan, a contemporary interpretation of the Farahan design. At 422 × 865 cm (36.5 m²) it is a palatial format, intended for very large rooms.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a Farahan all-over: a balanced, rhythmic field of stylised palmettes and curling botanical arabesques without a dominant medallion. The field is framed by an ivory main border of palmette-and-vine scrolls, flanked by soft-blue guard stripes with a running floral motif. The palette is calm: a soft blue-grey ground with warm beige florals, deep blue and indigo accents, camel-taupe and sparing ivory and cream highlights.
Material and Make
The rug is hand-knotted in 100 % hand-spun Ghazni wool on a cotton warp and weft, as an even, full pile of medium-fine density.
Presence in the Room
At 422 × 865 cm (36.5 m²) this is a palatial format. Three settings in which it can be used:
- Hotel lobby or ballroom: a large reception or event space with a central floor area to cover.
- Large residential hall: a double-height entrance or the main hall of a country house, where the quiet palette leaves room for the architecture.
- Boardroom or club lounge: a conference floor or members' lounge that needs a calm, large-format floor covering.

This rug is part of our made-to-order Djoharian Design collection. It can be adapted to your project:
- Size: 422 × 865 cm as shown; the design can be produced in other sizes.
- Colour: we work with the Pantone and RAL systems and over 1,200 yarn shades.
- Material: wool, silk, mohair, cashmere, bamboo silk and blends on request.
- Knot density can be specified per project.
- A 30 × 30 cm strike-off sample is provided for approval before production.
