Film Provenance

This carpet was loaned to the production of Spencer (2021), directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Kristen Stewart in her Oscar-nominated portrayal of Princess Diana — a role nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and screened in competition at the Venice International Film Festival. The rug was used as set decoration in an opulent Sandringham-inspired interior, appearing on the original film set, and returned to the Djoharian Collection after production wrapped. It is offered now as a documented, film-attested collector's piece. Provenance is verifiable through the Djoharian Collection's 1stDibs listing with film provenance.

Provenance and Production

The carpet is a Djoharian Design piece, hand-knotted in Afghanistan in 100% hand-spun highland wool, entirely vegetable-dyed, on a cotton warp and weft. The vegetable dyes give the deep, light-responsive colour that reads equally as English country house and as collector-grade Oriental carpet — exactly the quality the cinematography of Spencer drew on for its most charged interior scenes. As a museum-scale, fully documented piece with verifiable film provenance, it represents a genuine investment-grade collector's acquisition.

Colour and Composition

On a warm rust-red ground, the field carries a bold lattice of large circular Suzani-style medallions — five rows of roundels filled with radiating cross-and-star devices, drawn in royal blue, mid-blue, olive green, ivory and mustard-gold. The medallions alternate in colour across the field, framed by a broad main border of rosettes and palmettes on a rust-and-gold ground, with multiple guard stripes. The whole palette is muted and harmonious — the depth of tone that only vegetable dyes produce — reading as quietly grand rather than ostentatious across a vast floor.
