Tekab Bidjar Runner Rug
160 × 60 cm · Cusped Ivory Medallions on Red
A finely knotted Bidjar from the Tekab district — two cusped ivory medallions with pendant finials on a red Mahi-Herati ground, framed by a floral ivory border. Dense, hard-wearing and precisely drawn.
Provenance · Tekab
Bidjar, in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gives its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — the pile is beaten down so firmly while the wool is still damp that collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia.” Tekab lies within this weaving district, and Tekab Bidjars are regarded as the most accurate and finely drawn of the group. In the Djoharian Collection we carry this runner as an example of Kurdish knotting at its best: thanks to the extreme compression of the knots, a rug of this construction is all but indestructible.
Design and Construction
Two large cusped ivory medallions with scrolling olive-green outlines and pointed pendant finials sit along the length of the field. Both medallions and the red ground between them are worked in the classic Mahi-Herati lattice — the diamond-and-leaf “fish” pattern, drawn here with unusual clarity in wine red, indigo, olive, orange and light blue. The main border runs on an ivory ground with large palmettes, rosettes and small blossoms, held between navy floral guard stripes and finished with a red outer edge. The pile is 100% fine new wool on a cotton foundation, with ivory cotton fringes at both ends.
Quality · Tekab Fine
Knotted at approximately 400,000–500,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 260–320 kpsi (knots per square inch). At that density the Mahi-Herati lattice stays crisp and legible even at this small scale, and the pile — a firm 12 mm — compresses into the hard, weighty handle typical of a Bidjar.
Presence in the Room
At 160 × 60 cm (0.96 m²) this is a narrow runner format:
- Hallway and entrance: the ideal width for a corridor or in front of a wardrobe, where a Bidjar's density earns its keep under daily traffic.
- Kitchen and galley: a warm, hard-wearing strip along a work surface.
- Bedside or study: the Mahi drawing is fine enough to reward close looking.
