A hand-knotted rug is a unique object of lasting value. Our cleaning process is an ecologically gentle hand wash that removes deep-seated dirt and fine dust without stripping the natural protective layer of lanolin from the wool fibres. The result is a genuinely clean rug — which matters in households with allergies or pets.

Our family has been in the rug trade in Lower Franconia since 1967, and for three decades the business was in Würzburg itself: Semmelstraße 12–14 from 1974 to 2000, then Augustinerstraße until 2006. Customers who bought from us in the Semmelstraße still bring their rugs in for washing today.

The Djoharian care process

Every rug goes through the same proven stages in our workshop:

• Mechanical dust removal: gentle but thorough extraction of embedded sand and allergens in the dusting machine, before any water touches the rug.
• Hand washing: gentle wet washing with lanolin-replenishing detergents, matched individually to material, age and condition.
• Rinsing: repeated rinsing with clear water until no detergent residue remains in the weave.
• Controlled drying: water extraction in a specialist centrifuge, then hung in a ventilated, climate-controlled room so the rug cannot warp.

Water and fire damage requires immediate specialist treatment and accelerated drying, and is billed by time and effort. We prepare written estimates for insurers.

Collection in Würzburg and the surrounding municipalities

From a total rug area of 6 m² — one 200 × 300 cm carpet, or two smaller rugs together — we collect from your home free of charge and bring the rug back when it is finished. Below that size we charge a small fee depending on the distance.

We drive the whole city: Altstadt, Sanderau, Frauenland, Zellerau, Grombühl, Lindleinsmühle, Heidingsfeld, Heuchelhof, Steinbachtal, Lengfeld, Versbach, Dürrbachtal and Rottenbauer. Parking in the old town is what it is — tell us when you book and we will work around it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is hand washing better than dry cleaning?
Dry cleaning uses solvents that strip the natural wool grease, lanolin, from the fibre entirely. The wool becomes brittle and re-soils quickly. Our lanolin-replenishing hand wash preserves that protective layer, keeps the weave supple and brings the colours back.

Do you repair fringes and edges as well?
Yes. We renew worn side edges, secure or re-knot fringe bands, and close holes and moth damage entirely by hand.

Is the process suitable for rugs on underfloor heating?
Yes. We treat pure natural materials in a gentle wet process and use no synthetic finishes, so the rug stays breathable and the heat comes through.

How long does it take?
Allow around a week for a straightforward wash. Drying cannot be hurried — the rug hangs until the foundation is dry through. Repairs add time depending on the work.
