Ariana Khotan Ziegler Rug — Hand-Knotted Highland Wool 8 × 10 ft
A quietly elegant master production in hand-spun Afghan highland wool — the spacious Ziegler vocabulary drawn in Khotan motifs, in a washed charcoal-grey palette with soft blue accents.
The Ariana Line — Ziegler Tradition, Khotan Drawing
The Ariana line takes the Anglo-Persian Ziegler vocabulary — spacious composition, softened palette, low even pile — and combines it with the Khotan motifs of the eastern Silk Road. The historic Ziegler & Co. workshops of the late nineteenth century re-drew Persian carpet design for Western interiors: more open, more restrained, less saturated. Khotan rugs, by contrast, come from the oasis cities of the Tarim Basin, where Chinese and Persian design influences met for centuries. The Ariana brings the two together — the calm, allover Ziegler field carrying a finely articulated Khotan rhythm of palmettes, vinework and lattice-set cartouches.
This piece is hand-knotted by master weavers in northern Afghanistan, the region that today produces some of the finest hand-spun, vegetable-dyed wool rugs in the world. The result is a contemporary carpet with the soul of a nineteenth-century original — a quiet, confident rug made for contemporary interiors rather than a museum vitrine.
Material and Craft
The pile is 100% finest hand-spun highland wool, knotted on a cotton foundation and cut to a short, even pile that gives the surface its washed, vintage-elegant character — an almost “erased” quality in which the drawing reads softly rather than sharply. Hand-spun wool takes natural dye unevenly by nature, and it is exactly this gentle variation, the abrash, that gives the field its depth and movement across so large a surface. A genuinely hand-knotted piece, where every knot is tied by hand.
Colour and Composition
The palette is deliberately restrained and contemporary: a charcoal to slate-grey ground carries an allover field of ivory and sand vinework, with soft, dove-blue accents threaded through the palmettes and the lattice-set diamond cartouches. There is no central medallion — the design is a balanced, rhythmic repeat that reads the same from every side, which makes the rug especially easy to place. The overall effect is calm and tonal: a structural, almost architectural surface rather than a decorative statement, equally at home in a classic or a thoroughly modern room.
Presence in the Room
At 240 × 295 cm (7.1 m²) this is a large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Ariana Khotan reaches its full effect:
- Dining room for 8–10: The low pile keeps chair movement effortless, and the muted Khotan drawing reads clearly from above.
- Contemporary living room: Beneath a sofa configuration, the charcoal-grey-beige palette acts as a structural foundation without dominating the room.
- Bedroom or stately study: The Khotan motifs add a quiet narrative element while the soft palette keeps the room calm.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a real Khotan rug, or a Ziegler design?
It is both, by design. The Ariana is a contemporary master line that combines the open, softened composition of the Anglo-Persian Ziegler tradition with the motif vocabulary of the historic Khotan rugs of the eastern Silk Road. It is not an antique Khotan from the Tarim Basin, nor a strict reproduction — it is a new, hand-knotted piece that draws on both traditions to create a calm, allover field suited to modern interiors.
Why does the colour vary slightly across the rug?
That gentle variation is called abrash, and it is a hallmark of genuine hand-knotted rugs made with hand-spun, naturally dyed wool. Because each batch of yarn takes dye a little differently, the ground shifts subtly between charcoal and slate as the light moves. It is not a flaw — it is exactly what gives a washed, vintage-elegant rug its depth and life across so large a surface. A perfectly uniform colour would indicate a machine-made piece.
How do I care for the washed highland wool?
Hand-spun highland wool is naturally resilient and dirt-repellent thanks to its lanolin content. Regular gentle vacuuming (without a rotating brush bar) and prompt blotting of spills with a clean, damp cloth is all the routine care it needs. The short, even pile makes the rug easy to keep, and it is suitable for use over underfloor heating. For a deeper clean every few years, we recommend professional hand-washing — a service we offer in our own atelier.
