Signed Hereke Silk Rug
91 × 62 cm · Flowers of the Seven Hills
Silk-on-silk, hand-knotted in Bursa silk at approximately one million knots per square metre — a signed Hereke from the highest tier of Turkish silk knotting.
Provenance and Imperial Heritage
Hereke, on the eastern shore of the Sea of Marmara, has been a byword for sovereign-grade knotting since the Imperial Ottoman manufactory was founded there in 1843. Originally established to supply the palaces of the Ottoman court, the Hereke workshops developed a standard of fineness that has remained the international benchmark for Turkish rug production to this day. Hereke is one of the very few weaving centres in the world whose name alone signals collector-grade authentication.
This piece carries a Hereke signature — the workshop mark that authenticates the rug as a genuine Hereke production rather than an imitation. It was hand-knotted from genuine Bursa silk in both pile and foundation, the Turkish silk that has defined Hereke production since the manufactory was founded. The Bursa silk, dyed exclusively with natural colours, gives the rug the unmistakable lustre that distinguishes Hereke work from lesser silk productions.
Knot Density and Construction
The knot density is approximately 1,000,000 knots per square metre (654 kpsi — knots per square inch). At this density, every leaf vein, every floral filament and every curve of the design is rendered with a precision that only a master silk weaver on a silk foundation can achieve. The pile is correspondingly low — approximately 3 mm, tightly clipped to maximise the visibility of the fine drawing. A coarser construction cannot render this level of detail, and a cotton foundation cannot support this knot count: this silk-on-silk structure is the signature of a top-class Hereke.
Colour and Composition
The motif is the classical “Flowers of the Seven Hills” design — a disciplined Hereke floral vocabulary set in the saturated palette of the natural-dye tradition. The composition unfolds across deep blue and red grounds with gold, beige and green floral accents. It reads at once as a calm classical pattern and as a textile that shifts character with the light: silk catches daylight differently than wool, appearing warmer in evening light and more silvery by day.
Presence in the Room
At 91 × 62 cm (0.56 m²) this is a small-format collector's piece. Three contexts in which the signed Hereke silk reaches its full effect:
- Wall hanging as textile art: Hereke silks have been collected and presented as wall art since the early twentieth century. The shifting silk lustre becomes part of the work when the rug is mounted vertically.
- Prestigious accent surface: on an executive desk, a sideboard or a console in a private gallery — a piece of this provenance and knot density signals craftsmanship without volume.
- Considered collector's gift: a signed Hereke silk at this density is among the most considered textile gifts the trade can offer — for collectors, for institutional recognition, for milestone occasions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Hereke signature mean?
A woven signature (workshop mark) in the rug identifies it as a genuine Hereke production. Because the Hereke name commands a premium, the signature is an important part of authentication — it distinguishes a true Hereke from the many silk rugs woven elsewhere in the Hereke style.
Can I hang it on the wall?
Yes — fine silk rugs of this size are traditionally displayed as textile art. We recommend a fabric sleeve sewn to the back with a hanging rod, never clips or nails, so the weight is distributed evenly. Mounted vertically, the silk lustre shifts with the light and becomes part of the piece.
How do I care for a silk-on-silk rug?
Silk is more delicate than wool. Keep the rug out of prolonged direct sunlight, vacuum gently without a beater bar (or only with suction), and never machine wash. For cleaning, always use a specialist experienced with fine silk rugs. On the floor, a rug pad is essential to protect the low pile.
