Pure silk on a silk foundation — the Garden of Paradise rose design on a luminous gold ground, knotted at around one million knots per m².

Provenance and Knotting Tradition

Qum (Ghom) is one of the youngest of the great Persian rug-knotting cities — production began in earnest only in the 1930s — yet within a generation its workshops had elevated pure silk knotting to a level that rivals the finest Isfahan and Nain manufactories. A fine Qum silk is one of the most demanding pieces a master weaver can produce: every knot is silk, the design must be drawn at exceptional density, and the slightest irregularity is visible against the lustrous ground.

This piece was hand-knotted in Qum, Iran, approximately 30 to 40 years ago, from 100% pure natural silk in both pile and foundation at a density of approximately 900,000 to 1,000,000 knots per m² (580 to 645 knots per inch²).

The Garden of Paradise — Colour and Composition

The composition follows the classical Garden of Paradise vocabulary — a Persian visual idiom that translates the Quranic description of paradise into textile, with flowering rose bushes, songbirds and a paradise garden in tiered, symmetrical arrangement. A luminous gold-mustard field carries dense bouquets of roses in old rose, deep bordeaux and cream, with foliage and stems in green and small accents of light blue; songbirds animate the upper field. A deep red border with floral scrollwork frames the field, set off by fine cream and pale-blue guard stripes. The silk lustre shifts the whole palette as the light moves — the gold ground turning from honey to pale amber across the surface.

Presence in the Room

At 155 × 100 cm (1.55 m²) this is a focused small format — a piece for considered placement and close looking. Three contexts in which the Qum silk reaches its full effect:

  • Reading nook or study: Beside a writing desk or beneath a single armchair, the Garden of Paradise field rewards quiet, repeated viewing.
  • Entrance or vestibule: As a hero piece on the way into the home, the silk lustre signals craftsmanship without ornament-overload.
  • Wall hanging as textile art: Pure silk pieces of this density are equally at home on the wall as on the floor — the shifting light becomes part of the work.
