Vintage Beni Mguild Berber Rug
315 × 185 cm · Camel & Honey Gold
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
The Beni Mguild are one of the great Berber tribal confederations of Morocco's Middle Atlas plateau. Their rugs are woven by women of the Beni Mguild tribe in a knotting tradition older than living memory — a craft passed from mother to daughter across generations. This genuine vintage piece from the 1970s–80s shows the qualities collectors look for in an authentic Berber: a warm, abrash-rich field quieted by decades of soft sun, walked-in patina, and the unmistakable rhythm of a hand that knew the loom by heart.
This piece was hand-knotted by Berber weavers in the Middle Atlas mountains, Morocco, in 100% hand-spun sheep's wool in both pile and foundation — the traditional tribal wool-on-wool construction. The pile height ranges from approximately 18 to 22 mm, reduced in areas where the rug has been most walked on. The 315 × 185 cm format makes it well suited as a large living-room anchor or a generous bedroom piece.
Colour and Composition
This is an open, undecorated field rather than a patterned tribal rug — its character comes entirely from colour and surface. The palette is a warm camel and honey gold, alive with pronounced abrash: the horizontal striations that arise when hand-spun, naturally dyed wool is woven in small batches, here shifting between pale cream, sand and deeper amber. A few darker brown brush-stroke lines run vertically through the field, and small coral-red flecks punctuate the surface — the free, painterly markings of a genuine tribal weaving. The effect is closer to an abstract canvas than to a geometric carpet: a muted, glowing ground that anchors a room without competing with it.
Presence in the Room
At 315 × 185 cm (6.1 × 10.3 ft), 5.8 m² this is a medium room-size piece. Three contexts in which the vintage Beni Mguild reaches its full effect:
- Living-room anchor: the soft camel palette and painterly surface give a contemporary seating group a quiet, lived-in foundation.
- Generous bedroom: wool pile and the patinaed surface beside a queen or king-size bed give a master bedroom a warm, restful base.
- Layered styling: the warm honey gold reads beautifully under a neutral overlay or beside a darker accent rug in an open-plan interior.
