Bidjar Rug · Fine
152 × 90 cm · Ivory Medallion on Rust Orange
A finely knotted Bidjar in the classic composition — a large ivory medallion set on a rust-orange Herati field, with deep navy corner spandrels and a broad ivory border. Dense, hard-wearing, and drawn with real precision.
Provenance and Heritage
Bidjar, in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gives its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — the pile is beaten down so firmly while the wool is still damp that collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia.” A Bidjar of this construction lies flat from the first day, holds its shape without a backing, and takes decades of traffic without thinning.
Design and Construction
A large ivory hexagonal medallion sits at the centre, itself filled with a miniature Herati lattice in wine red, olive and rose, and outlined by a fine grey-blue serrated contour. It is set within a second, larger hexagon on a rust-orange ground — an unusual and warm field colour for a Bidjar, more Ferahan than the customary madder red — which carries the same Herati lattice at full scale, punctuated by small ivory rosettes.
The four corner spandrels are worked in deep navy, so the composition reads as three distinct zones rather than one flat plane. A broad ivory main border with red serrated palmettes and a geometric vine frames the whole, held between red guard stripes and closed by a black selvedge. Ivory cotton fringes finish both ends.
Quality
Knotted at approximately 360,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 230 kpsi (knots per square inch), with a 10 mm pile. At that density the Herati stays fully drawn across the whole field, and the corner spandrels keep their pattern rather than reading as blocks of dark colour — the detail that separates a good Bidjar from an ordinary one.
Presence in the Room
At 152 × 90 cm (1.37 m²) this is a versatile small format:
- Entrance hall: substantial enough to define the space, dense enough to take the traffic.
- Beside a bed: the full length of a single bed, with room to step onto it.
- In front of a sofa or fireplace: the warm rust ground sits well with wood and leather.
