Tekab Bidjar · Kurdistan · Fine Quality · New

Tekab Bidjar Accent Rug
70 × 50 cm · Herati on Deep Navy

A small, exceptionally finely knotted Bidjar from the Tekab district — a jewel-like piece where the full Herati vocabulary is compressed into barely a third of a square metre.

Provenance · Tekab

Bidjar, in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, gives its name to the densest and most durable hand-knotted rugs in the Persian canon — the pile is beaten down so firmly while the wool is still damp that collectors have long called them the “iron rugs of Persia.” Tekab lies within this weaving district, and Tekab Bidjars are regarded as the most accurate and finely drawn of the group. At this size the quality is immediately obvious: nothing in the drawing is simplified to fit the format.

Design and Construction

An elongated hexagonal medallion, outlined in terracotta and aubergine, is set on a field of deep navy so dark it reads almost black — the perfect ground for the all-over Herati lattice that fills it in gold ochre, salmon, wine red, light blue and ivory. Ivory corner spandrels carry the same pattern in reverse contrast, a classic Bidjar device that makes the small field feel considerably larger. The main border runs on a warm terracotta ground with a rose-and-palmette vine, enclosed by navy guard stripes with a fine zigzag. The pile is 100% fine new wool on a cotton foundation, with ivory cotton fringes at both ends.

Quality · Tekab Fine

Knotted at approximately 400,000–500,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 260–320 kpsi (knots per square inch). In a piece this small that density is what makes the difference — every rosette and leaf of the Herati stays fully drawn, and the firm 12 mm pile gives the hard, weighty handle typical of a Bidjar.

Presence in the Room

At 70 × 50 cm (0.35 m²) this is an accent piece rather than a floor covering:

  • Entrance: a small mat inside the door, where its density stands up to daily use.
  • Wall or console: fine enough to hang, or to lay on a chest or side table.
  • A first Bidjar: an affordable way to own genuine Tekab quality at full knot density.

Excellent experience with the seller, Karl. He responded to all my questions. In addition to the photos on the website, he sent even more photos and a video of the rug, which is exactly as it appeared. The purchase was simple. Shipping was via UPS and the rug arrived one week later.

We were unsure which rug to choose, and wanted a rug that was in almost new condition. Karl was very honest about the conditions of the rug, even details/"defects" that we cannto necessarily see on a computer screen, In the end, our Tibetan rug came early which was perfect timing for our new home, and in the good condition just as Karl described. We absolutely love our new rug. Thank you.
