A new hand-knotted Qum silk rug — an ivory floral medallion on a navy field, silk pile on a silk foundation, at 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per m² (approx. 516 to 645 kpsi).
Qum — Silk on Silk
Qum (also Qom, Ghom) is a centre of Persian silk weaving; its ateliers emerged in the 20th century. This small-format piece is hand-knotted entirely in silk (mulberry silk), both pile and foundation, at 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per m² (approx. 516 to 645 kpsi). The pile is approximately 5 mm high. As a new rug it has its full pile.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a classic Qum medallion: a central ivory floral medallion with a coral-red rosette at its heart, set on a navy-blue field filled with dense floral vinework. Coral-orange corner spandrels frame the field, and a multi-band border encloses it: an ivory main border with a floral garland, turquoise-green and navy guard stripes and fine pearl bands. The palette is navy blue, ivory, coral-orange, turquoise, green, salmon-rose and gold-brown. As with silk generally, the surface changes with the light: daylight brings out the sheen, evening light deepens the navy ground.
Placement and Display
At 57 × 84 cm (0.48 m²) this is a very small format that suits display better than floor traffic. Three settings in which it works well:
- Wall hanging: behind a console or in a reading corner, where the silk catches changing light.
- Centred on a low table: a small accent that can be looked at up close.
- Desk or sideboard accent: a small piece beside a writing surface.
