Provenance and Heritage

Mohajeran is a Sarouk type from the Arak region in central Iran. This piece dates to around 1920 and is now over a hundred years old.

It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation.

Around 1900–1930, the workshops of the Arak region wove for two markets: the Persian domestic trade and the American market. For American interiors, importers favoured a dense floral drawing on a deep rust-red ground, and such pieces became known as “American Sarouks”. This rug belongs to that group: Mohajeran floral bouquets over a deep red field.

Colour and Composition

On a deep rust-red ground, the field carries a dense all-over of separate floral bouquets — stylised blossom sprays, palmettes and curved leafy branches — scattered with rhythmic regularity. The drawing is rendered chiefly in deep navy and royal blue, with ivory, light blue, camel-gold and touches of green. The field is framed by a navy main border of interlocking palmette-and-vine scrolls with ivory cartouches, flanked by several guard stripes. The deep red ground is typical of Sarouk rugs made for the American market in this period.

Condition

Good antique condition for its age.

Presence in the Room

At 265 × 350 cm (9.3 m²) this is a full room-size piece. Three settings in which it works well:

• Living room: beneath a seating group, the deep red ground sits well with dark wood, leather and brass in traditional or library interiors.
• Dining room: under a large table with the chairs pulled back, the all-over floral field remains clearly visible.
• Open-plan space: at this size it can define a seating or dining area within a larger room.

The deep red ground and dense floral field are at home in a Chelsea or Belgravia drawing room with dark wood, brass and leather, or in the dining room of a Cotswold manor — and it reaches London or the Cotswolds within 2–7 working days.
