A hand-woven tribal flatweave runner in a flowing chevron rhythm — hand-spun, plant-dyed wool from Afghan workshops near the Pakistani border.
The Arijana Tribal Line
Arijana kilims are hand-woven in workshops in southern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border, a region with a long tradition of tribal flatweave. The Arijana line reinterprets historic tribal designs of the area in wool, coloured with plant dyes. The wool is hand-spun, the structure is a pure flatweave with fringes at both ends, and the piece shows the slight irregularities of hand-woven work.
The geometric tribal design can be used in modern as well as traditional interiors.
Colour and Design
This runner carries a continuous chevron zigzag along its full length — stacked horizontal bands of serrated peaks, a design rooted in the historic flatweave tradition of the region. The palette combines mustard-gold, turquoise, indigo blue, rust-brown, olive green and cream, coloured with plant dyes, and each zigzag is shaded so that the colour shifts softly along its length.
Presence in the Room
At 70 × 380 cm (2.7 m²) this is a long, narrow runner format. Three settings in which it can be used:
- Long hallway: the chevron rhythm follows the line of the corridor.
- Staircase or gallery corridor: the narrow proportion and thin flatweave profile suit transitional spaces.
- Kitchen runner or in front of a long sideboard: a textile accent for a linear feature of the room.
