Heriz-Style Rug
8 × 10 ft · 245 × 305 cm · Navy, Terracotta & Ivory
A new hand-knotted rug in the Heriz style — an all-over geometric floral design on a navy field with a terracotta border, woven in India.
Heriz Style — Hand-Knotted in India
This is a contemporary hand-knotted rug in the design tradition of Heriz — the rug region in northwest Iran known for its bold geometric drawing and architectural sense of scale. The piece itself is not from Heriz; it is woven in India, where workshops make rugs that take up the Heriz design vocabulary.
This piece is hand-knotted in 100 % wool on a cotton foundation. As a new rug it has its full pile.
Colour and Composition
The field is a deep navy blue, carrying an all-over composition in terracotta, ivory, camel, soft light blue and touches of green. A wide terracotta border with rosettes and angular vinework frames the field. Depending on the light the navy can read with a green-blue depth.
Rather than a single dominant medallion, the composition is an all-over design: rows of palmettes, vases, blossoms and angular leaf forms spread symmetrically across the field, in the Mahal/Sultanabad reading of the Heriz idiom. Corner and border motifs repeat the same geometry.
Presence in the Room
At 245 × 305 cm (7.47 m²) this is a large format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Living room: under a full seating group, with the navy ground beside warm woods and upholstery in terracotta, ochre or cream.
- Dining room: under a dining table, with room for the chairs when they are pulled back.
- Open-plan space: as a large rug that marks out a seating or dining area.
Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring.
