Large room-size rugs — 7 × 10 ft and above

Past a certain size a rug stops decorating a room and starts defining it. It carries the whole seating arrangement rather than sitting in front of it, it takes the echo out of a high-ceilinged space, and in an open-plan floor it does the job the missing walls would have done.

It also becomes a piece of logistics, which is the part worth thinking about before the part about pattern.

The formats

• 8 × 10 ft (240–250 × 300 cm) — the most useful large size; a dining table for six, or a full living room group. See the 8 × 10 collection.
• 8 × 11 ft (245 × 335 cm)
• 9 × 12 ft (275 × 365 cm) — the classic American room size, and a good fit for a table seating eight
• 10 × 14 ft (305 × 425 cm) — from here upwards the trade calls them oversize
• 11 × 15 ft (335 × 455 cm)
• 12 × 18 ft (365 × 550 cm)
• 16 × 21 ft (490 × 640 cm) — our largest regular stock format

Sizing at this scale

• Dining, 8 to 12 seats — the rug must extend at least 60 cm past every edge of the table so chairs stay on when pulled back. A table for ten needs 9 × 12 ft as a realistic minimum.
• Open-plan living — size the rug to the seating group, not to the room. It should be wider than the sofa and reach under the front legs of everything in the arrangement.
• Bedrooms — laid under a king bed with enough left over to step onto on both sides and at the foot; 9 × 12 ft upwards.
• Libraries, halls and conference rooms — keep 30 to 50 cm of visible floor to the walls; running a large rug right up to the skirting makes the room feel smaller.

Made to measure

Large rooms are rarely standard sizes, and this is where a commission often makes more sense than a compromise. We weave to order up to 850 × 490 cm in normal production, and our partner workshops can go to around 200 m² on special commission — antique Persian medallion designs, Heriz geometry, Ziegler palettes, plain grounds or a design of your own. Typical lead time is three to six months. Made-to-measure rugs.

An honest note on buying at this size

The problems at this scale are physical, not aesthetic.

Weight. A 9 × 12 ft wool rug runs 50 to 70 kg; an antique Bidjar of the same size considerably more. It arrives rolled, it is heavy and unwieldy, and unrolling it needs two or three people and a clear room. Turning it once a year needs the same.

Access. Measure the route, not just the room. A 5.5 metre roll does not go round a tight stairwell or into a small lift, and the diameter of the roll matters as much as its length. Tell us about narrow stairs, low doorways or awkward corners before ordering — we can plan the delivery around them, and it is much easier than solving it on the doorstep.

Fit. Hand-knotted rugs are measured, not manufactured. A piece listed at 365 × 550 cm can vary by a few centimetres end to end, and old buildings are rarely square either. If a rug has to fit an alcove exactly, tell us the tightest dimension and we will measure that piece specifically.

Cleaning. A rug this size cannot be washed at home and will not fit in most cleaning plants. It is worth knowing where it will be washed before you buy it.

Care

Vacuum in the direction of the pile with the rotating brush bar off the fringes. Turn the rug end for end once a year — at this size the difference between the walked strip and the part under the furniture becomes obvious within a few years otherwise. Use felt pads under heavy legs. Blot spills rather than rubbing. Hand washing every five to ten years is right for domestic use, and it is a workshop job at these dimensions.
