A shop you can walk into

We are a family business in the rug trade, and we have a shop with an address and fixed opening hours — Ludwigstrasse 21 in Lohr am Main, in Lower Franconia, roughly midway between Aschaffenburg and Würzburg.

There is a name and a face behind this website, and a room you can stand in.

That matters more than it sounds. Almost everything in this trade is sold from photographs, and a photograph cannot carry the two things that decide most purchases: how a rug feels in the hand and underfoot, and the way wool or silk takes the light — that sheen, which shifts as you walk around the piece. Nor can a screen lay three rugs beside one another, which is how the choice is actually made. In the showroom we put them side by side and you compare.

Since 1967

The family trade has its roots in the Grand Carpet Bazaar in Tehran. The German business was founded in 1967 and has stayed in Lower Franconia ever since — for three decades of that time in Würzburg itself.

  • 1967–1974 — Lohr am Main
  • 1974–2000 — Semmelstrasse 12–14, Würzburg
  • 2000–2006 — Augustinerstrasse, Würzburg
  • since 2006 — back in Lohr am Main

Customers who bought from us on Semmelstrasse in the eighties still bring their rugs in for washing. That is the part of this business we are proudest of. Trust is the one thing in this trade you cannot buy.

Local and worldwide — the same stock

On any given week we might lay rugs out in a living room in Karlstadt and ship an antique piece to a designer in New York. It is the same inventory and the same pair of eyes behind both, and we think each half makes the other credible.

For the region that means we come to your home with a selection, free of charge and with no obligation. For customers further afield it means more than twenty-five years of trading internationally online, and a shop you can look up, call during opening hours, and visit.

Why the drive is worth it

If you can get here, you will learn more about rugs in one afternoon than in weeks in front of a screen.

The reason is mundane. Wool, wool with a silk content and pure silk are three lines on a specification sheet; in a room they are unmistakable, because each material gives the light back differently. The same holds for knot density, for hand-spun highland wool against ordinary wool, for natural dyes against chemical ones. And why two rugs of the same size can differ threefold in price explains itself the moment both are lying beside each other and you take them in your hands.

Then there is the choice: more than a thousand pieces in one place, weighted towards the large formats. A rug stays with you for twenty or thirty years — measured against that, the journey is quickly justified.

  • Würzburg — about 45 minutes
  • Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region — about 1 hour
  • Fulda — about 1 hour
  • Nuremberg — about 2 hours

And if you cannot come to us, we come to you within the region, or ship worldwide.

What we keep in stock

More than 1,000 hand-knotted rugs are in the showroom at any time, every one of them a single piece, with a particular emphasis on large and oversized formats — the sizes that are hardest to find and that decide how a big room reads. Beyond that we can reach some 10,000 further pieces at short notice through our dealer network. Where nothing existing fits, we have rugs made to your measurements, colours and design.

Where the rugs come from

Fine Persian workshop weaving forms the core: Qum in silk, Isfahan, Tabriz, Nain and Kashan, alongside sought-after provenances such as Sarouk, Mashhad, Kirman, Shiraz, Mohajeran, Heriz and Mahal, and the Ziegler designs.

Beyond Iran we buy from Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Morocco — Tibetan knotting in hand-spun highland wool, Moroccan Berbers both new and vintage, flatweaves and kilims. Each piece is chosen in person, judged on the quality of the knotting, the wool and the condition.

Browse by origin: Tabriz · Qum silk · Ziegler & Afghan · Nepal & Tibet · Moroccan Berber
