A Berber Kilim — Flat-Weave and Embroidered

This piece belongs to a Moroccan Berber tradition that combines two textile techniques in one rug: a hand-woven flat-weave foundation with embroidered relief work applied over selected areas of the surface. The result reads as a kilim — light, foldable, low-profile — but carries a quiet sculptural dimension where the embroidered figures rise above the woven ground.

The palette stays in the muted Berber register: beige, soft grey and warm brown — earth tones that integrate naturally into both contemporary minimalist and warmer rustic interiors. The hand of the wool is dense and supple, the surface alive without being noisy.

Vintage Character

We date this piece to approximately the 1970s–1980s, the classical vintage window of Moroccan Berber production before mass-market manufacturing diluted the tradition. The condition is very good, with the gentle softening of fibres and slight irregularities of hand that distinguish a genuine vintage piece from a contemporary reproduction.

At 240 × 162 cm (5.3 × 7.9 ft), 3.9 m² this is a versatile mid-format piece. As a flat-weave it sits low and clean. Three contexts in which the Kilim reaches its full effect:

• Living room coffee-table area: the low profile and muted palette anchor a seating group without competing with sofa or armchairs.
• Open-plan kitchen-dining transition: kilims are easy to live with under chair-leg traffic; the embroidery adds tactile interest at floor level.
• Bedroom or layered styling: at the foot of the bed, or layered over a larger neutral foundation, the relief surface reads as a quietly considered accent.
