Fine Qum Silk Rug — Floral Medallion
195 × 132 cm · Silk on Silk
Pure silk on a silk foundation — a finely drawn floral medallion on a luminous sky-blue ground, knotted at around one million knots per m² and finished with a woven signature cartouche.
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
Qum (Ghom) is one of the youngest of the great Persian rug-knotting cities — production began in earnest only in the 1930s — yet within a generation its workshops had elevated pure silk knotting to a level that rivals the finest Isfahan and Nain manufactories. A fine Qum silk is one of the most demanding pieces a master weaver can produce: every knot is silk, the design must be drawn at exceptional density, and the slightest irregularity is visible against the lustrous ground.
This piece is a new, recently woven Qum, hand-knotted in Qum, Iran from 100% pure natural silk in both pile and foundation, at a density of approximately 1,000,000 knots per m² (around 645 kpsi). It carries a woven signature cartouche in the upper field — the workshop's mark of authorship — and reaches us in pristine, unused condition.
The Floral Medallion — Colour and Composition
A luminous sky-blue field carries a finely drawn central floral medallion with a rosette core, framed by symmetrical pendants and answered by deep navy-and-ivory corner spandrels. Across the ground, a dense allover of Shah-Abbasi palmettes, vines and blossoms unfolds in cream, coral, soft rose and gold, with smaller accents of terracotta. A deep red border of floral scrollwork frames the field, set off by fine ivory and pale-blue guard stripes. As the light moves, the silk lustre shifts the whole palette — the blue ground turning from cornflower to pale azure across the surface.
Presence in the Room
At 195 × 132 cm (2.57 m²) this is a focused small-to-medium format — a piece for considered placement and close looking. Three contexts in which the Qum silk reaches its full effect:
- Reading nook or study: Beside a writing desk or beneath a single armchair, the medallion field rewards quiet, repeated viewing.
- Entrance or salon: As a hero piece at the threshold, the silk lustre signals craftsmanship without ornament-overload.
- Wall hanging as textile art: Silk pieces of this density are equally at home on the wall as on the floor — the shifting light becomes part of the work.
