Bauhaus Vocabulary in Wool

This vintage rug joins the craft of hand-knotting to the visual language of European modernism. There is no medallion, no border and no floral drawing. The field is built from asymmetric, stepped geometric forms, the kind of pure composition associated with the Bauhaus and De Stijl. “Bauhaus” here describes the design language, not the place of weaving.

Colour and Composition

The ground is a warm, dusky mauve-rose with a lively abrash: the subtle shifts of tone that appear when hand-dyed wool from different dye lots is used during knotting. Against it, two turquoise stepped forms descend from the upper edge, sharply outlined in ink blue and accompanied by a single line of orange and a band of lavender grey. A horizontal band of stripes in dark brown, ivory and rose crosses the upper third. The balance is deliberately off-centre: spacious, architectural and unmistakably modern.
