Vintage Beni Mguild Berber Rug
185 × 315 cm · Camel & Honey Gold

Provenance and Tribal Heritage

The Beni Mguild are a Berber tribal confederation of Morocco's Middle Atlas plateau. Their rugs are woven by women of the tribe in a knotting tradition passed from mother to daughter. This vintage piece from the 1970s–80s shows a warm, abrash-rich field softened by decades of light, walked-in patina and the free rhythm of hand weaving.

This piece was hand-knotted by Berber weavers in the Middle Atlas mountains, Morocco, in 100 % hand-spun sheep's wool in both pile and foundation — the traditional tribal wool-on-wool construction. The pile height ranges from approximately 18 to 22 mm, reduced in areas where the rug has been most walked on. The 185 × 315 cm format suits a large living-room anchor or a generous bedroom piece.

Colour and Composition

This is an open, undecorated field rather than a patterned tribal rug — its character comes from colour and surface. The palette is a warm camel and honey gold, with pronounced abrash: horizontal striations that arise in hand-spun wool, here shifting between pale cream, sand and deeper amber. A few darker brown brush-stroke lines run vertically through the field, and small coral-red flecks punctuate the surface. The effect is closer to an abstract canvas than to a geometric carpet: a muted, warm ground that anchors a room without competing with it.

Presence in the Room

At 185 × 315 cm (6.1 × 10.3 ft), 5.8 m² this is a medium room-size piece. Three contexts in which the vintage Beni Mguild comes into its own:

  • Living-room anchor: the soft camel palette and painterly surface give a contemporary seating group a quiet, lived-in foundation.
  • Generous bedroom: the wool pile and patinated surface beside a queen or king-size bed give the room a warm base.
  • Layered styling: the warm honey gold works under a neutral overlay or beside a darker accent rug in an open-plan interior.

Excellent experience with the seller, Karl. He responded to all my questions. In addition to the photos on the website, he sent even more photos and a video of the rug, which is exactly as it appeared. The purchase was simple. Shipping was via UPS and the rug arrived one week later.

We were unsure which rug to choose, and wanted a rug that was in almost new condition. Karl was very honest about the conditions of the rug, even details/"defects" that we cannto necessarily see on a computer screen, In the end, our Tibetan rug came early which was perfect timing for our new home, and in the good condition just as Karl described. We absolutely love our new rug. Thank you.
