The Mazandaran Roxane Line
The Mazandaran Roxane Collection is a Djoharian Design line of oversized hand-woven kilims inspired by the panel and checkerboard idioms of the Caspian region of northern Iran. These flatweaves combine ancient tribal weaving traditions with a sophisticated Scandinavian-Art-Deco aesthetic, making them an architectural foundation for contemporary interiors. The kilims are hand-woven from hand-spun wool, with a clean panel composition that reads as both tribal and minimalist.
This piece is the Black and Wool-White variant in the palatial 12 × 15 ft format — the monochrome configuration of the Roxane line, with the highest graphic contrast for architectural interiors.
Colour and Composition
The palette is the most graphic of the Roxane line: deep black panels on undyed wool-white grounds, in a clean checkerboard rhythm. The flat-weave construction gives the surface an ultra-thin, almost graphic presence (height approx. 0,3 cm), while the hand-spun wool retains a subtle textural variation that no machine-made flatweave can replicate. Finding a kilim in this palatial size is a rarity — the Roxane line is one of the few contemporary flatweave productions in this scale.
Presence in the Room
At 450 × 365 cm (16.4 m², approx. 12 × 15 ft) this is a palatial-format piece for the most generous interiors. Three contexts in which the Mazandaran Roxane reaches its full effect:
- Palatial living room: Beneath a generous sofa group of five to six pieces with side tables and armchairs, the black-and-white checkerboard provides the most architectural foundation of the entire collection.
- Stately dining room: Under a long table for ten to twelve, the monochrome panel rhythm reads as a measured architectural pattern from above.
- Loft or gallery space: The ultra-thin profile and the graphic black-and-white composition pair particularly well with concrete, blackened steel and exposed architectural materials.
