Songhor Koliai 4.7 × 3.4 ft Rug
142 × 103 cm · Medallion on Rose
A lozenge medallion in blue, red and ivory on a rose field, blue spandrels with stylised birds and a dark-brown border — a hand-knotted Kurdish village rug from western Iran with a thick, full wool pile.
Design: Medallion on Rose
At the centre of the rose field sits a lozenge medallion with a dark-blue core and red and ivory hooked forms, continued above and below by small pendants. The field around it is densely filled with small geometric blossoms, stars and leaves. Large blue spandrels frame the field; in the four corners, ivory and red sections carry stylised bird motifs. The broad dark-brown main border carries geometric blossom forms in red, blue and ivory, accompanied by narrow red guard stripes. The drawing is lively and freely drawn, typical of village work from this region.
Provenance and Construction
Songhor-Koliai is a largely Kurdish weaving district in Kermanshah province, western Iran. Rugs from this area are known for their sturdy, heavy build and strong colours. This vintage piece is hand-knotted with a pile of 100% wool on a cotton warp. With a pile of about 14 mm it is thick and full underfoot.
Presence in the Room
At 142 × 103 cm (4.7 × 3.4 ft, 1.46 m²) this is a versatile small format:
- Bedroom: beside the bed as a bedside rug.
- Living room or study: as an accent in front of an armchair, a sideboard or a desk.
- Entrance: as a warm entry rug in the hallway.
More pieces: vintage rugs, Persian rugs and small rugs.
