Abadeh Rug — Triple Diamond Medallion
147 × 98 cm
A finely knotted Abadeh from southern Persia — three diamond medallions on a tomato-red field, scattered with tribal motifs and framed by a cream rosette border.
Abadeh — Tribal Art Between Shiraz and Isfahan
The town of Abadeh lies between the legendary cities of Shiraz and Isfahan in southern Persia. Its weavers occupy a distinctive position in tribal weaving: they took the spirited geometric vocabulary of the surrounding Qashqai nomads and gave it a more ordered, workshop-disciplined structure — a tribal rug with the legibility and finish of a town carpet. This piece is finely hand-knotted in highland wool, its dense knotting allowing the crisp articulation of the three-medallion field and the intricate rosette border.
This piece is hand-knotted in 100% highland wool on a stable cotton foundation, in the classical Abadeh manner. As a new rug, it arrives with its full pile, crisp drawing and bright, unfaded colour.
Colour and Composition
A vivid tomato-red field carries three vertically stacked diamond medallions — a dark brown-aubergine centre medallion with a blue-and-cream floral cross, flanked by two cream-and-brown pendant medallions above and below. A serrated petrol-green diamond lattice frames the medallions, and the red field is densely scattered with tribal motifs: small birds, stars, rosettes, botehs and geometric sprays in indigo blue, light blue, petrol green, mustard-gold, brown and cream. The corner spandrels are worked in dark brown-aubergine with cream Heybatlu corner anchors. A broad ivory-cream main border carries bold round rosette and flower-wheel motifs in red, blue and brown, divided by blue palmette leaves. The palette is full and lively — the brightness of a new piece, not the muted tone of an aged one.
Presence in the Room
At 147 × 98 cm (1.4 m²) this is a focused small format — a piece for considered placement and close looking. Three contexts in which the Abadeh reaches its full effect:
- Study or library: Beside a writing desk or reading chair, the structured tribal field reads as a clear narrative anchor.
- Bedside accent: Beside a bed, the wool surface and warm red palette add tactile depth.
- Modern entryway: Against architectural materials, the fine tribal geometry becomes a quiet textile statement.
