Antique Kashan Dabir
273 × 375 cm · 9 × 12 ft · Ivory
An antique Kashan of the 1930s in the Dabir manner, hand-knotted in wool — a finely composed floral field of roses, blossoming sprays and curling leaves on an ivory ground.
Provenance and Heritage
Hand-knotted in Kashan in central Iran around 1930–1940, this is a finely drawn antique carpet in the classical Kashan tradition. Kashan lies on an old trade route and has been a weaving centre for centuries.
From around 1870 a number of manufactories developed in Kashan — among them Dabir and Mohtasham — which are known for their use of imported English Manchester wool. The drawing of this piece follows the Dabir manner: a balanced, finely articulated floral composition.
The pile is wool, knotted on a cotton warp and weft. The knot density is approximately 250,000–360,000 knots per m² (approx. 161–232 kpsi), which allows the small flowers, leaf veins and slender curling tendrils of the drawing to be rendered precisely.
Colour and Composition
The composition rests on an ivory-to-cream ground that gives the carpet a light, open character. Across it runs a finely drawn floral field of roses, blossoming bouquets and curling leaves. The palette is gentle and balanced: rose-pink and soft blues in the flowers, madder reds in the blossoms and greens in the foliage, framed by a main border carrying the same floral repeat and set off by fine ivory guard stripes.
Presence in the Room
At 273 × 375 cm (10.2 m²) this is a large-room carpet. Three contexts in which it comes into its own:
- Formal dining room: under a table seating eight to ten, the ivory ground keeps the room light.
- Living room or reception: anchoring a full sofa group, the gentle palette and fine drawing reward close looking.
- Large bedroom or modern interior: the light ground and classical drawing act as a counterpoint to minimal walls and clean lines.
The ivory ground keeps a formal room light: a dining room in a white stucco house in Belgravia, or a Georgian drawing room in Bath with tall windows onto the garden — and it reaches London or Bath within 2–7 working days.
