A semi-antique Rose-Bidjar from Bidjar, Kurdistan, c. 1950s–60s — hand-knotted in wool with an ivory medallion and rose-patterned borders on a red field.
Origin and Weaving Tradition
The town of Bidjar in Kurdistan, western Iran, gives its name to the Bidjar rug, which is known for its dense, firm construction. This Rose-Bidjar was hand-knotted there in the 1950s–60s. It is a semi-antique piece, roughly 60 to 70 years old.
It was knotted in wool on a cotton warp and weft, at approximately 160 kpsi (approx. 250,000 knots per m²).
Design and Composition
An ivory medallion in a rosette-star form sits at the centre, framed by ink-blue cartouches and rose palmettes, on a red field worked with a fine all-over floral lattice. Open rose blossoms recur in the medallion, in the navy corner spandrels and in the ivory main border — the motif of a Rose-Bidjar, drawn in the lightly geometric hand of Kurdish weavers.
The palette is a deep red ground, navy borders and spandrels and an ivory medallion and main border, with rose pink, soft green, light blue and touches of gold. The dyes are natural dyes.
Condition
Very good overall condition for its age. The pile is even, and the rug retains its original fringes, selvedges and sides.
Presence in the Room
At 283 × 404 cm (11.4 m²) this is a large format that needs a generous space. Three settings in which it works well:
- Formal dining room: under a table for eight to ten, with room for the chairs to stay on the rug when drawn back.
- Living room: large enough to carry a full seating group — sofa, armchairs and table on a single rug.
- Entrance hall, library or office: a classic Persian rug in a representative space.
