Provenance and Berber Heritage
The Beni Ourain are a confederation of Berber tribes who have lived for centuries in the Middle Atlas mountains of northern Morocco. Their hand-knotted rugs are known for cream wool grounds and dark-line geometric motifs. Originally woven as functional blankets for the cold mountain winters, Beni Ourain rugs became a reference point of mid-20th-century design.
This piece was hand-knotted by Beni Ourain weavers in Mrirt, Middle Atlas region (Morocco), from undyed cream wool. The composition departs from the classical Beni Ourain lozenge vocabulary by placing a stylised lion at the centre of the field — a figural element drawn in the same black lines as the surrounding border.
Colour and Composition
The palette is the classical Beni Ourain idiom: a cream ivory ground with the drawing in black. At the centre stands the stylised lion — upright tail, striped body, blocky maned head. The field is framed by a double black-line border filled with small scattered tribal devices. Knotted wool fringes finish both ends.
Mrirt Quality
Mrirt rugs are hand-knotted in Morocco in a Berber technique with a shaggy pile. The pile of this rug stands roughly 2–3 cm high, giving a soft, plush surface.
Presence in the Room
At 168 × 188 cm (5.5 × 6.2 ft, 3.16 m²) this is a near-square, medium format. Three settings in which it works well:
- Modern living room: the cream-and-black palette suits mid-century furniture, oak and Scandinavian-style interiors.
- Children's room or family space: the lion gives the rug a playful character.
- Bedroom or reading nook: the thick wool pile gives a warm, soft surface underfoot.
