Isfahan — Origin and Weaving

Isfahan became the capital of the Persian empire in 1598 under the Safavid Shahs; its knotting workshops date from that period.

This piece was hand-knotted in Isfahan, Iran. The pile is 90 % wool (cork wool) and 10 % silk on a 100 % silk warp, at approximately 800,000 knots per m² (approx. 516 kpsi). At this knot density the star-shaped medallion and the curling arabesques are drawn in fine detail. As a new rug it has its full pile.

Colour and Composition

A beige inner field carries a cappuccino-toned star-shaped medallion with floral arabesques radiating from the points of the star. A cappuccino border frames the composition, and silk highlights run through the floral lines. The palette is neutral and calm: beige, cappuccino and cream.

Presence in the Room

At 104 × 182 cm (1.9 m²) this is a small format. Three settings in which it works well:

• Minimalist or Scandinavian interior: the neutral beige and cappuccino palette suits light wood, natural materials and a pared-back interior.
• Library or study: beside a writing desk or beneath a reading chair, where the star medallion can be looked at up close.
• Entrance hall or bedroom: in a small reception area or at the foot of a bed, the restrained palette stays in the background.
